Acute examinations and therapy

Is your child seriously ill? We are here for you if your child has a feverish infection, cough, cold, gastrointestinal infection, skin rash or any other new symptoms.

Most of these illnesses are viral and ‘self-limiting’, meaning that your child will recover after a few days. Please call to make an appointment during the specified consultation hours.

Infections

Acute infectious diseases can also be caused by bacteria. You will notice this mainly because your child has a high fever and this fever may not be reduced even with ibuprofen or paracetamol.

In this case, we either prescribe antibiotics immediately or initiate the necessary diagnostic measures.

Protection of other patients

As we see healthy newborns, infants and older children every day in our practice for preventive check-ups, we kindly ask you to have your sick child tested for coronavirus, influenza and RSV before visiting our practice between October and March.

You can purchase this at any pharmacy. Please mention this to our staff when making your appointment by telephone.

Laboratory medical examinations and tests

If necessary, it is already possible in practice to quickly diagnose different clinical pictures.

These include, for example, throat swabs for streptococci or urine analyses in cases of suspected urinary tract infections.

Blood sampling

As part of the J1 (preventive medical check-up between the ages of 12 and 14), a blood sample is taken as standard. This is used for a comprehensive check-up of the blood count, liver and kidney values, thyroid hormones and, if necessary, other parameters.

Of course, we can take blood samples at any age if indicated. To make this as stress-free as possible, we offer ‘magic plasters’ containing a local anaesthetic.

Preventive medical check-ups

In addition to acute treatment, the second major task of paediatrics is to examine healthy children at regular intervals.

Preventive medical check-ups, beginning with the U2 at 3 to 10 days of age, accompany children in Germany until they reach the age of majority. These include medical, psychosomatic and social paediatric examinations. In our experience, children enjoy these preventive medical check-ups! For this reason, we like to separate the check-ups from the vaccination appointments.

Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy

During preventive medical check-ups, but also ‘in between’, parents or paediatricians may notice a delay in motor and language development.

Sometimes this concern is unfounded – sometimes, however, it is not. In such cases, we prescribe a thorough examination and, if necessary, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

Vaccinations and vaccination advice

Vaccinations are among the greatest achievements of modern medicine.

At our practice, we vaccinate in accordance with the recommendations of the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) in Germany, which is part of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the most important national public health institute. The little ‘prick’ can be a big challenge for children, but we will help you and your children overcome it!

Hearing and vision tests

As part of the U8 (at age 4), all children undergo a hearing test at our practice.

If you feel that your child cannot hear well, we will refer you to our ENT colleagues at any age, regardless of the U8 check-up. From the U5 (at 6 months) onwards, we offer the ‘Plusoptix eye test’ at our practice. Unfortunately, this test is not covered by statutory health insurance. However, we strongly recommend it for the early detection of possible visual impairments. The eye tests previously carried out using so-called ‘eye charts’ are not really practical for your child until they reach preschool age.

Psychotherapy and coaching

Sometimes even little people need someone to take care of their souls.

Parents also need support from time to time. For these cases, the St. Hedwig paediatric practice offers, among other cooperation partners, a trusting collaboration with the Balagan Therapy Centre Berlin, whose therapist practises on site in our premises. Please contact us if you and your family are interested in this service.
